Signing Lady Gaga and Bon Jovi

One of SignShine’s moms emailed me this very interesting article this morning.

Thank you Laurie!

“The first question that interpreters get asked is, "But why would a deaf person go to a concert?" They think it's a silly question, but everyone asks it.

Going to a concert is partly about hearing the songs. It is equally about the costumes, the spectacle, the pulsing, the convulsing - the sticky, claustrophobic mass of humanity. When you consider this, it makes perfect sense that deaf people go to concerts.
But someone still needs to interpret the words".

Is lady gaga signing MOON??

That's fantastic - the article explains wonderfully how ASL is NOT English. I'd love to see the video the interpreter posted of her "Love Game" performance!

This article probably surprised a lot of people. Deaf people at concerts? If you have little experience with the Deaf world, it would be difficult to understand why a Deaf person would go to a concert.

To see and feel it! ...The energy of the people, the vibrations of the speakers, the movement of the people, the smells of the audience, the visual enjoyment of various people and all the fashion styles ...

It's important to remember that not every Deaf person is completely Deaf. Don't assume that because someone is Deaf, s/he can't hear at all. There are varying degrees of deafness. Besides the energy, vibrations, smells, and visual enjoyment at concerts, many Deaf people also are able to enjoy the sounds of particular beats.
